WORKSHOP DETAILS

5 May: Learn about Composting and Living Soils. Learn why composting is the holy grail of organic growing, and what you need to know to make a healthy compost; learn how to apply the biodynamic preparations in compost, and participate in making a hot compost heap; discover which additives you can and should be putting in organic compost. We will make a free standing hot compost heap in the garden. 2-3 hours, an initial presentation followed by a hands on workshop making a hot compost bed.

19 May: Make Organic Potting Mix and Seed Raising Mix. Learn how to make your own; understand the nutritional requirements for seeds and seedlings; learn which seeds to sow where, and how to sow both in containers and in the ground. Take a bag of premium organic potting mix away with you. 2-3 hours, an initial presentation followed by a hands on workshop making seed raising mix and potting mix, and sowing seeds.

2 June: Learn the Basics of Agronomy. Learn the fundamental growing techniques for different types of vegetables; discover how to create soil conditions specific to different types of vegetables; know the key mistakes to avoid when growing organic vegetables. 2-3 hours, a detailed and informative presentation followed by a walk through the garden.

16 June: How to Manage Pests and Diseases Organically. Understand why pests attack certain plants and not others; learn the key pests and disease problems for specific vegetable crops; learn techniques for preventing pests and diseases before they occur - and for dealing with them when they do. We will make several pest repelling organic sprays. 2-3 hours, an informative presentation and spray making demo, followed by a walk through the garden.

30 June: Creative Organic Container Gardening. Learn essential organic methods to keep container plants healthy; learn how you can use recycled materials to build your own low cost container garden (and your own vegetated green walls); see how to make an organic foliar feed to supply container plants with supplementary minerals. 2-3 hours, an initial presentation followed by a hands on demo making a container garden from recycled materials. We will also make an organic foliar feed.

Come and hear how to adapt your garden to capture, store, utilize, and celebrate water.  Future proof your landscape in times of drought, save money on water rates, and save time watering plants.  Water tanks, swales, storage ponds, natural swimming pools, rainchains, appropriate plants, and a walkabout to see some nearby examples.

MAKE BIODYNAMIC TREE PASTE/ TREE PRUNING WORKSHOP

Come and learn how to make the holy grail of tree pruning paste - biodynamic tree paste, using ingredients such as diatomaceous earth, preparation 500, organic cow manure and organic milk.  Hear how Carl rescued an orchard of heritage fruit trees eaten by hungry sheep using this paste.  We’ll also prune an apple tree and learn some basic pruning techniques.

LIVING (GREEN) WALLS

Featuring a slideshow and discussion about the current trend for living or green walls – seen in cutting edge urban landscapes, or as a stylish feature wall in retrofitted and new buildings. Green walls are popping up around the city.  Green walls have numerous benefits, both aesthetically and also for helping air-condition, clean the air and absorb CO2. • Learn how to build your own living green wall - with a mix of recycled and cost effective materials – Carl will build a DIY living wall in the second half of this workshop.
