Port Chalmers Community Garden
Port Chalmers Community Garden was designed by Carl Pickens in 2008 after meeting with community garden co-ordinator Nicola Bould in Dunedin. A group of enthusiastic volunteers were wanting to lease land at a Port Chalmers site but needed a plan for application to council. Despite there being no money available, Carl gave his time voluntarily and produced a design in consultation with the volunteer group. The plan helped the group secure a lease on their preferred site from Dunedin Council. Unfortunately in 2010 the site had to be abandoned after soil tests revealed the presence of contaminants….but not before considerable progress was made.
Carl’s gorgeous design for our community garden was inspiring, and just the ticket for securing the lease of the land from the city council. Carl himself was wonderful to work with, he listened to our wants and needs and suggested ways of achieving them, and because we were just getting up and going did the whole design for free! so amazing – we couldn’t have wished for a better landscape designer to cross our path right when we needed one. So Carl, a HUGE thank you from our community Garden.
