Hohepa Farm Canterbury
After studying organic growing at Canterbury Polytechnic in 2004 Carl went on to manage the organic horticulture unit at Hohepa Farm Canterbury through 2005/ 2006. Carl’s responsibilities included 4 acres of intensive and open field vegetable/ herb production, a 2 acre heritage apple/ pear orchard and associated activities such as windrow composting, organic weed and pest control, growing all produce from seed to sale (including weekly harvesting and managing the packhouse).
All this was achieved with the assistance of wwoofers, European farm volunteers and paid labour. This experience has been invaluable in helping Carl understand the science and practicalities of growing organic food.
‘Carl you sure do know how to grow food’
Bruce Tomlinson, farm manager, Hohepa Canterbury
